Are liberal critics boosting support for the new immigration law?

WEEKLY STANDARD - 5/27

But after over a month of national debate and media coverage - including criticism from both the American and Mexican presidents, and a host of newly minted experts, a curious thing is happening. The state's new law has not led to massive deportation or racial cleansing in the desert. And there is even some evidence it's growing in popularity, both in Arizona and nationally.

Arizona's STO/Tax Credit Law Headed To The Supreme Court

RANDOM MUSINGS - 5/26

It might surprise some observers that Arizona's school tuition tax credit law made it to the Supreme Court before Arizona's police-state anti-immigrant law, but the STO law has been around for better than a decade while the immigration law has been on the books for less than a month.

Thanks in large part to Governor Jan Brewer's bold action in signing SB 1070, immigration is shaping up as the issue of the 2010 election. The left cannot win that match.

So Arizona Was Right After All?

POWERLINEBLOG - 5/26

Arizona's law that attempts to enforce existing immigration statutes was premised largely on the fact that the federal government, which has constitutional responsibility for border control, has essentially abdicated--not just failing, but actually refusing to carry out its constitutional responsibility, as a matter of policy. President Obama, other members of his administration, and many more on the left responded with vicious attacks on the people of Arizona, accusing them of racism, irresponsibility, and so on.

So is Obama now prepared to admit that Arizona was right all along? That its complaints about lax federal enforcement were legitimate, and not motivated by racism or hysteria? And that if National Guardsmen can enforce immigration laws without resort to unwarranted racial profiling, so can Arizona law enforcement personnel?

Amendment 10A

WIZBANG - 5/25

In Arizona, the state has suffered for years the burdens inflicted by the federal government's refusal to enforce border security and the laws regarding illegal aliens. It's something that has bothered many states, but Arizona has been especially hard hit. Finally, the people of Arizona had enough and passed a law demanding that its law enforcement officials do what the federal government refused to do: to enforce the existing laws on the books.

This sent the Obama regime into a frenzy.

Arizona Law Emulates California Penal Code 834b

HUMAN EVENTS - 5/25

Got an interesting email Monday demanding that I boycott California -- pointing out that the California penal code requires law enforcement to check the status of suspected illegal aliens. That looks a lot like Arizona's new illegal immigration enforcement law, so I checked it out on the FindLaw.com website and lo and behold -- it's true!

Graphic evidence of what Arizona is up against

AMERICAN THINKER - 5/24

Stretching from northern Mexico, southwestern Arizona and southeastern California, the Sonoran Desert has the barrenness one associates with a wilderness along with areas of striking stark beauty. It is also one of the many routes used by illegal aliens of all backgrounds to sneak into the United States.

...Does former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano (D) know about this? Did she in her years as governor?......

AZ immigration bill becomes hot potato in gubernatorial race

HOT AIR - 5/24

The new law in Arizona has entered into the politics of the governor's race ... in California. GOP hopeful Steve Poizner has a new ad in the final days before the June primary in the Golden State hammering opponent Meg Whitman for her public stance against Arizona's SB 1070. Poizner wonders whether California needs a governor who has the same opinion about the Arizona measure as Mexico's president, Felipe Calderon

AMERICAN THINKER - 5/21

In the age of Attorney General Eric Holder - who not only won't pursue the case against the New Black Panther Party, who won't investigate the allegations that Joe Sestak was illegally offered inducements by the Obama administration to drop his primary challenge against Arlen Specter, who won't investigate similar offers made by the Obama team to former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff to drop his primary challenge to Senator Michael Bennett, who won't investigate ACORN on possible racketeering charges, who has a blase approach towards terrorism and who cannot even utter the words "Islamic terrorism" - should we be surprised that John Morton, who heads U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, proudly declare he won't process illegal immigrants referred to them by Arizona state officials?

Arizona, The Thoughtful State

WIZBANG - 5/20

There's been a lot of talk about Arizona's threatening to retaliate against Los Angeles' "boycott" of their state by cutting off their power. LA gets about 25% of its electricity from AZ, and if that were to be suddenly terminated, the City Of Angels would be in a world of trouble.

Only thing is, no such threat was made.

In Arizona, one single public official on the state's utility board sent a very politely worded letter of inquiry to the city government inquiring if their boycott would include Arizonan electricity, and kindly offering to assist them should they decide it does. No threats, no attempts at coercion, no imprecations, just an innocuous inquiry.

Obama Doubles Down on Arizona

POWERLINE - 5/20

President Obama's approval rating among likely voters has been falling. Maybe it's random variation, but I can't think of anything Obama has done over the last couple of weeks that would cause his ratings to drop other than his repeated attacks on the people of Arizona, and, by implication, the majority of Americans who support Arizona's effort to enforce the immigration laws. Perhaps Obama doesn't realize that it was President Bush's promotion of "comprehensive immigration reform" that sent his approval ratings into the deep-freeze during his second term.

Trespassing law may turn more illegal immigrants into citizens

AZ CAPITAL TIMES - 5/20

Arizona's new immigration law may have been aimed at deporting as many illegal immigrants as possible, but an ironic side effect will allow more undocumented residents to apply for temporary work visas and permanent U.S. citizenship, according to research by the Arizona Capitol Times.

If the Arizona law results in MORE illegal immigrants being apprehended, this will put a greater number of them in front of judges, giving more people a chance to apply for temporary work visas and even permanent citizenship.

OBAMA TRASHES ARIZONA

NEAL NUZE - 5/20

Obama says that the law allows for the possibility of people being "harassed or arrested." He says, "The judgments being made in applying this law will be troublesome ... In the United States of America, no law-abiding person -- be they an American citizen, a legal immigrant, or a visitor or tourist from Mexico -- should ever be subject to suspicion simply because of what they look like." Now is it just me or is that a blatant misinterpretation of the law?

Palin: All border states should have Arizona's immigration law

HOT AIR - 5/20

It's remarkable how immigration reform has blown up in the faces of Democrats. Just a few months ago, Obama thought he could use the issue to split Republicans and reclaim political momentum for November. Now the debate over Arizona's demand for enforcement has splintered his party, provided something close to political consensus among Americans, and outed the elites as hyperbolists - and as illiterates.

Neither President Obama nor the president of Mexico is in any position to object to Arizona's attempt to control illegal immigration

NRO - 5/20

We've pretty much had it with the attacks on Arizona and the self-debasement of our country by the president. We are the United States and Arizona is our soil, part of our country. Lately, however, there's been too much denigration of Arizona from the White House, and too much tearing down of Arizona for a law that is - if anything - more liberal than the federal law.

Yesterday, we saw it again when Mexican president Felipe Calderon and the president spoke jointly, and jointly critically, at the White House. The New York Times headline sums it up: "Obama & Calderon Decry Ariz. Immigration Law."

The Obama Administration: Ignorance Of The Law Is Their Excuse

RIGHT WING NEWS - 5/18

The ignorance of Barack Obama and the people in his administration is just astounding. Eric Holder has criticized the Arizona immigration law although he admits he hasn't read it. Now Janet Napolitano is saying it's a "bad law enforcement." Unfortunately, both Holder and Napolitano are following in the footsteps of Barack Obama who got the basic facts about how the law works wrong by claiming that, "suddenly if you don't have your papers and you took your kid out to get ice cream, you're going to be harassed."

Here's the thing: this isn't one of these 2000 page bills that the Democrats have been forcing through Congress lately. It's a short bill. You can read through it in a few minutes time. Yet, they don't feel the need to bother.

WHAT MORE PROOF DO YOU NEED?

NEAL BOORTZ - 5/18

Then we got to the two pertinent questions about the Arizona law. First ... What power does an Arizona law enforcement official have under the new Arizona law that a federal law enforcement official in Arizona did not already have? As you might have guessed, Gonzales steadfastly refused to answer the question. Why not? Because the answer to that question is "None. Not one." All the Arizona law did was to give Arizona law enforcement the authority to enforce the very same exactly laws that the federal government absolutely refuses to enforce in Arizona.

Question two: Please tell me, Mr. Gonzalez, what type of identification does a non-citizen have to carry in Arizona under the new Arizona law that the very same non-citizen did not already have to carry under the already existing federal law? Yeah .. and you think he answered that question? Not a chance in hell. He didn't answer it because, again, the answer is None. Nothing. Nada. Nunca.

ARIZONA'S IMMIGRATION LAW

BIG GOVERNMENT - 5/18

My father taught me that to be a good citizen you have to follow the laws. I believe that still today. I am successful because I have followed the laws of this great nation. I believe, to find success in this country it must first start there. I have driven past Home Depots, like many of you. I think about the lives those men are living and my heart hurts for them. I know they struggle to put food on the table just like my father did. I know they came here seeking a better life for their children. I understand their plight, but their method in achieving that goal is what I cannot understand.

Our current system has moved beyond common sense. Our President has failed to uphold the laws set out by Congress and states are not allowed to enforce the federal laws.

Eve Nunez: "We need to treat the immigrants that are here humanely."

SONARAN ALLIANCE - 5/17

In the above video, Eve Nunez, candidate for LD 12 Senate, is characterized as opposing SB 1070. She claims she’s against illegal immigration and that she believes in securing the border. Then she says at 4:22, "[w]e need to treat the immigrants that are here humanely." She also says that Leviticus 19:33-34 directs that, "[w]e should treat immigrants as we treat our own."

A point of semantics, but an important point none the less: "Immigrants" are here legally and if an individual is in the U.S. illegally, they are an "illegal alien." If one believed in deconstruction, the subtext of Ms. Nunez’s quotes is that she believes illegal aliens are legal immigrants. Do the quotes above sound like statements from someone who believes in secured borders and stopping the flow of illegal aliens into the U.S.?

Witness the Quality of People Supporting Prop. 100

SONORAN ALLIANCE - 5/17

We've seen Jan Brewer's inarticulate admonitions to vote for Prop. 100, we've seen Goldwater underscore that there is more fat to be cut from government. Now, we see the quality of individuals who support prop 100 in this video. According to this story, a benighted ASU student who supports Prop 100 decided free speech isn't a right to be accorded to those he disagrees with. The student was caught red-handed tearing down anti-Prop 100 signs by Mr. Brandon Trichel. According to Mr. Trichel, about 80% of the anti-Prop 100 signs have been torn down by those who want to take more money from you to spend on what they deem your money is best spent on. It is little wonder the No on Prop. 100 campaign looks disorganized when thugs are tearing down the signs.

Obama Administration Apologizes To China For Arizona

We aren't, though we certainly don't have anything to prove to China when it comes to human rights. But the Arizona illegal immigration bill represents the will of the people, and it's not really anything all thing mind-blowing. The Arizona law doesn't enforce anything that isn't already federal law.
