Flake has 540 amendments for defense spending bill
AZ/DC-7/24
Flake, a longtime crusader against wasteful spending and corruption, says congressional earmarks, particularly defense ones, often amount to little-scrutinized "no-bid contracts" awarded to politically connected private firms. He'll file one amendment for each of the 540 earmarks in the bill that benefit private companies.

SUSTAINABILITY, EQUITY, DEVELOPMENT-7/24
Enjoy your vacation, Congress, while 14,000 a day lose their health coverage. Enjoy your vacation while 3 million seniors fall into the donut hole. Enjoy your vacation while unemployment goes double digit. Don't bother yourself with the 1850 Americans that perish during your holiday for lack of medical care.

The state received $61 Million from the feds earlier than we

public safety and economic development. The money is to be used at

California Making Some Tough Decisions - How About Arizona?
TUCSON CHOICES-7/24
As Arizona stares down a bigger looming budget than our neighboring state of California it's encouraging to see the Golden State making some tough decisions. Remember their voters shot down any new taxes a few months back basically telling the politicians to figure it out.

AZ Democrat Party and Unions Part Of Basha's Demise? A Financial Link To A Tucson City Council Person....
TUCSON CHOICES-7/24
From flyers that have been intercepted it appears that the Arizona Democratic Party in conjunction with the grocery service union may have had a hand in pushing Eddie Basha's grocery chains into bankruptcy. Stranger still, Eddie Basha has been a major democratic supporter for years including a run for Governor as a Democrat in 1994.

Did Giffords' Blue Dog mailer violate the law?
GILA COURIER-7/24
Back in November of 2007 Sonoran Alliance reported on a taxpayer funded mailer sent by Representative Gabrielle Giffords in which she touted her membership in the Democratic Blue Dog Coalition. An image of a blue dog was featured prominently on the mailer. Did Rep. Giffords unlawfully use the image? It looks like the answer is Yes!

Even more things that need to be fixed
FIX ARIZONA-7/24
If you haven't figured it out by now, there are a lot of things wrong in Arizona. It's not just the budget, there are many things that could use a swift kick in the butt to get moving in the right direction. Following the very popular installment from yesterday, I thought I would point out a few more things that need fixing

What is Natural Law and How Does It Effect Handguns?
SONORAN ALLIANCE-7/24
The concept of natural law has returned and become a part of public debate. In its most basic form, a belief in natural law is a belief that everyone is entitled at birth to a set of natural rights that guarantee their personal safety and property. Such rights are fundamental and cannot be restricted by individuals or even by governments. Not surprisingly, this idea is not without controversy.

Jim Hopkins' Gannett Blog was also a good case study because his goals were so modest. He wasn't trying to replace his six-figure USA Today salary. RANDOM MUSINGS-7/23
Choice: Reform must preserve patient choice. You should be able to choose your own coverage and doctors. If you like them you should be able to keep them, even if you change or lose your job or move to a new state. And you should be free to change coverage as you see fit.

National reports have disclosed that the Obama administration is threatening to withhold the stimulus funds from Arizona in a effort to punish Jon Kyl for questioning the efficacy of the stimulus package.
ESPRESSO PUNDIT-7/23
Of course, some "stimulus" money is flowing nicely...like the nealy $350 MILLION that the Obama Administration and the Democrats in Congress are giving to one of Arizona's richest residents--John Sperling. Of course Sperling is more than simply a rich Arizonan...he's a rich Arizonan who give tons of money to Democratic causes including maxing out to Congressman Harry Mitchell. What a tidy return on investment.

Budget fight gets personal
ROBERT ROBB-6/17
The Legislature has passed what is being widely described as an $8.2 billion general fund budget for next year.......
.....In reality, the legislative budget would authorize $9.7 billion in spending on general fund programs. The difference is made up with federal stimulus funds, sweeps of money in non-general fund accounts, and payment deferrals.
The $9.7 billion is about what the state is spending this year on general fund programs. So, despite all the wailing and moaning, the Legislature isn't really proposing a spending cut........

Mayor Phil Gordon says this isn't a conflict of interest - What do you think?
SEEING RED-6/16
Have you ever heard of Bombardier Transportation? Didn't think so.
For starters, the Montreal, Quebec-based company has recently been awarded a $260 million contract by the City of Phoenix. They are contracted to build a sky train at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, linking the airport terminals to the light rail, the rental car center and airport parking - a project scheduled for completion by 2020.
But even before the contract was awarded, Bombardier hired Phoenix-based Policy Development Group to help guide them through the bid process. And a wise move it was, given that the principles would certainly have an inside track - since the company is run by none other than Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon's sister and brother-in-law, Gail Gordon and Ron Ober.
Pretty cozy arrangement...>>>>>

State should spend less, hold line on taxes

...Our new governor, the conservative Jan Brewer, would have the courage and good sense to set us back on course to recovery.
It hasn't worked out that way. Right out of the box, she opined that she might possibly consider a tax increase to balance the budget if all other options had been exhausted. When politicians talk like that, it usually means hold on to your wallet, and this time was no exception....>>>>>

Sources confirm that Governor Brewer will personally file a law suit at the Supreme Court this morning in order to force the Legislature to transmit the budget bills.
ESPRESSO PUNDIT-6/16
....So what happens after she files her suit? From a legal point of view, the suit strikes me as a classic political question. We know that the Constitution says the bills "shall be" transmitted, but doesn't say when. The Supreme Court can say that the time needs to be "reasonable" but other than that, there really are no standards that the court can supply and the fight is between the two other distinct branches--both of whom must approve the Court's budget. That looks pretty nonjusticiable to me...>>>>
